Roller skates or quad skates? The best starter equipment for children

Choosing between roller skates and quad skates is a dilemma many parents face when planning what to buy for their child. Both roller skates and quad skates offer many advantages – they develop coordination, improve balance, teach concentration and provide plenty of outdoor fun. But which option should you choose when your child is just beginning their skating adventure?

Roller skates or quad skates for children – How do they promote agility and technique?

With roller skates, the wheels are arranged in a single line. This solution works well for children who quickly master balance and enjoy a challenge. Riding roller skates requires greater focus on maintaining stability, but it also allows for more dynamic movement. It is easier to turn, accelerate and brake and, over time, children develop techniques that can also be useful in other sports, for example ice skating in winter.

Quad skates – A more stable start and a greater sense of safety

Quad skates (with four wheels in a two-by-two arrangement) are a great option for beginners. Thanks to the wide wheelbase, they are more stable than roller skates, which makes learning easier for younger children. As a result, they’re the ideal choice for children who are just taking their first steps on skates and need a sense of security. It is worth noting, however, that they have less impact on learning balance than roller skates.

Hybrid models combining both solutions

Although both types of skates differ in their construction and skating style, you don’t have to choose just one and then stick to it. We offer 2-in-1 models that combine both functionalities. These are a great option for children who want to try both types of skates or need time to decide which suits them best. Thanks to this solution, children can acquire new skills more easily. The side wheels allow them to get used to the equipment, meaning that the transition to classic  roller skates will be smoother and simpler.

Roller skates for little princesses

The Ballerina model combines two rear wheels arranged like on quad skates with two front wheels positioned like on roller skates. Thanks to this, the child will feel more confident, maintain balance more easily and skate more willingly. Additionally, the Ballerina roller skates have different learning modes that can be selected by moving  a dial. The beginner mode allows the wheels to be locked so the child can learn to walk wearing the skates. The second mode unlocks the wheels so they can skate freely and faster once they are ready. This structured transition from standing firmly to maintaining balance and then skating consciously also creates a solid foundation for other skills and processes.

Which option will last longer?

If you are looking for an option that will ultimately become a fully functional roller skate, the Step One model is a good choice. The additional side wheels serve a protective function, making it easier for the child to maintain balance, and then when they are ready, they can be removed. The size is also adjustable, meaning they will last longer.

Both roller skates and quad skates offer unique advantages. Roller skates develop technique and riding dynamics, while quad skates offer stability and ease of learning. Fortunately, you don’t actually have to choose between the two. Hybrid models allow you to enjoy the benefits of both solutions and adjust the equipment to your child’s needs at every stage of development.

Regardless of the choice you make, the most important things are movement, joy and outdoor fun, because every moment spent outside is a new adventure!
